NHS Eye Tests

Who can get a free NHS eye test?


Age:

  • Children aged under 16
  • Aged 16 - 18 in full-time education
  • Aged 60 or over

Medical:

  • Registered as partially sighted or blind
  • Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • Aged 40 or over, and your mother, father, brother, sister, son, or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma
  • Have been advised by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that you're at risk of glaucoma

Income:

  • Receive Income Support *
  • Receive Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (not Contribution-based) *
  • Receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit *
  • Receive Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (not Contribution-based) *
  • Receive Universal Credit *
  • Are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate *
  • Are on a low income and named on a valid HC2 (full help) or HC3 (partial help) certificate *

Other:

  • Are a prisoner on leave from prison
  • Are eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher - your optometrist can advise you about your entitlement


How do I claim my free NHS eye test?


When you come for your eye-test someone will go through the relevant NHS forms with you so that you can claim your free eye test.

Please bring with you official documentation certifying your proof of entitlement for items marked with a asterisk above (*)


How often can i get a NHS funded eye test


If you're under 16, or over 70 years of age, you're entitled to a free eye test every year. If you're 16 to 69, you can get a free NHS eye test every two years. Also, if there are any changes to your prescription or health, you may be entitled to more regular eye tests as recommended by your optician.
